Info Wanted!

Wanstead House and Gardens, the 'English Versailles,' - England's finest Palladian mansion

As part of a major research project into William Pole Tylney Long Wellesley and the destruction of Wanstead House, we would be grateful to hear from anyone who may have original source material: letters, documents, images, or anything else relevant.

Of particular interest are:

  • The Rambler’s Magazine or Frolicsome Companion (No18) – Published in 1827
  • Original or transcript copies of letters relating to William and Catherine Long-Wellesley (nee Tylney-Long of Draycot House in Wiltshire)
  • Contemporary accounts of the Wanstead House Auction – 1822
  • Information on the whereabouts of remnants of Wanstead House
  • Original or transcript copies of letters relating to Richard Child (1680-1750) 1st Earl Tylney or his son John (1712-84) 2nd Earl Tylney – owners of Wanstead House and Park, and collectors of its many treasures.
